A contemporary renaissance man, Eddie Muller is a novelist, filmmaker, cinema historian, film preservationist, and television host. As founder and president of the Film Noir Foundation, Muller has restored and preserved dozens of nearly lost classics and obscurities.

Since 2003 he has produced and hosted his own NOIR CITY film festivals; the flagship festival in the San Francisco Bay Area is the largest noir retrospective in the world and has spawned nine other NOIR CITY festivals around the U.S. He has presented and lectured at the Cinémathèque Française in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Since 2017 he has programmed and hosted Noir Alley on Turner Classic Movies, a weekly program dedicated to classic and neglected films of the genre. The 2021 revised edition of his seminal 1999 work, Dark City: The Lost World of Film Noir, was hailed by The Hollywood Reporter as one of the “100 Greatest Film Book of All-Time.” His novel, The Distance, earned the Best First Novel Award from the Private Eye Writers of America in 2002. Tab Hunter Confidential: The Making of a Movie Star, which he co-wrote with the actor, was a national bestseller in 2007. In 2023 the Mystery Writers of America honored him with its prestigious Raven Award for contribution to the crime and mystery genre.

This year he has produced and written the documentary Dangerous Citizen: The Life and Times of Abraham Polonsky (premiering in Locarno), and next year will see the release of Noir Around the World (cowritten with Imogen Sara Smith), a globe-spanning exploration of the genre, as well as a film adaptation of his book Dark City Dames, about actresses synonymous with film noir.
